First, we want to congratulate all the winners of the 2023 Akron Soap Box Derby.  It is one of Northeast Ohio’s best traditions.  Celebrating the innovation and commitment to excellence of youth from all over the country to compete.  AUI is proud to be a part of it.

How Were the Participants Judged in the 2023 Akron Soap Box Derby?

  1. Vehicle Construction: Participants or teams construct their own soapbox derby cars using simple materials like wood, wheels, nails, and axles. The vehicles are designed to be gravity-powered and cannot include any form of motor or external propulsion.
  2. Safety: Safety is a crucial aspect of soapbox derby races. Participants must wear helmets and other protective gear to ensure their well-being during the event.
  3. Race Day: On the designated race day, participants gather at the top of the hill or slope where the course is set up. Each car is placed on the starting ramp.
  4. Gravity-Powered Racing: The races are gravity-powered, meaning the vehicles rely solely on the force of gravity to propel them downhill. Participants release their cars one by one, and the race is timed to determine the winner.
  5. Winning Criteria: The participant with the fastest time from the top of the hill to the finish line is declared the winner.
