We are looking forward to another exciting year at Akron’s own Soap Box Derby. For the past several years AUI has been a sponsor of this amazing event. The Akron Soap Box Derby started in 1934. And is celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2024. What an outstanding achievement! Akron is one of only three cities that have been in every All-American Soap Box Derby. The other two cities are Cleveland and Indianapolis.
With history so deeply rooted in our Akron, Ohio community we must be a part of this tradition! Every year in July, champions from all around the world compete in the First Energy All-American Soap Box Derby. AUI is proud to be one of the many sponsors of this event.
About The Akron Soap Box Derby:
The Soap Box Derby is a STEM-based education program designed to provide students, educators and OST providers with project- and standards-based, extracurricular learning opportunities. Powered by gravity soap box derby cars are built buy their teams and brought together to compete at Akron Derby Downs!
Through STEM education, young learners with hands-on opportunities to build Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills. While providing the building blocks for practical skills that will students throughout their life.
Volunteer with the Soap Box Derby:
There are many volunteer opportunities with the Akron Soap Box Derby. Individuals as well as businesses are encouraged to volunteer their time to support this non-profit organization. There are STEM competitions, summer camps, the world championship, girls racing to STEM workshops, inclusion day and senior day. Alternatively, the Soap Box Derby has a scholarship fund honoring Bill Speeg. The scholarship fund was established in 2016 in honor of Bill who passed away in 2014 at the age of 46.
